Calculation methodology
Every calculator on this page uses transparent, general engineering-planning formulas — never a fabricated or invented regulation. Where a jurisdiction publishes a verified minimum tank size, design flow, or loading rate, this suite is architected to display it separately and clearly labeled. Until that verified data is added for a given country or region, every result is labeled as a General Planning Estimate or General Engineering Estimate.
Tank size
Daily flow × retention period × safety factor, then rounded up to a common planning increment. Occupancy from bedrooms uses a simple general assumption (first bedroom = 2 occupants, each additional bedroom = +1), which you can override directly.
Volume
Rectangular: length × width × height. Vertical cylinder: π × r² × height. Horizontal cylinder with partial liquid: exact circular-segment geometry, not a rectangular approximation.
Dimensions
Solves length × width × depth = target volume using your preferred depth and length-to-width ratio (rectangular), or π × r² × depth = volume (cylindrical).
Drain field
Required area = design flow ÷ allowable loading rate. Trench length = area ÷ effective trench width. Requires a design/loading rate you supply or that a verified local table provides — this suite does not invent a universal percolation-to-loading relationship.
Pumping frequency
General planning model: expected time to reach a sludge/scum threshold, based on tank capacity, occupants, and an editable accumulation-rate assumption, adjusted for usage level and garbage disposal use. Always expressed as a range.
Installation cost
Uses a configurable pricing dataset (country/region/currency/source/date). No dataset in this build is pre-populated with invented prices — where no verified data exists, the tool collects your own local cost assumptions and labels the result accordingly.
Capacity check
Compares existing tank capacity against the same planning-estimate formula used in Calculator 1, applied to your proposed bedrooms/occupants, and reports a status band with a stated tolerance.
